Cleanings & Exams

What is a dental cleaning and exam?

A dental cleaning and exam are essential parts of maintaining oral health. Regular dental cleanings help to promote good oral health by removing plaque, bacteria, and tartar from your mouth. An exam allows for an evaluation of your oral health. If there are concerns, they will be discussed with you and a plan (called a treatment plan) will be created to help improve your oral health.

Why should I have a dental cleaning and exam?

Regular cleanings and checkups, along with proper care at home, help prevent decay and gum disease.  Exams and cleanings also help to ensure that any small problems are addressed before they become big problems. For most people, regular cleanings and exams should be performed every 6 months; although some people (particularly individuals with a history of gum disease or extensive decay) benefit from being seen more often.

What can I expect when I come in for a cleaning and exam?

First and foremost you can expect that we will do all we can to help maintain and improve your oral health.  We are here to help you, and regular cleanings and exams are a vital part of good oral health. During your cleaning and exam appointment, we will evaluate the health of your teeth and gums. We will also perform an oral cancer screening.  X-rays are usually taken, which allow us to more fully evaluate your oral health. During your cleaning, our hygienist will use specialized equipment to remove plaque, bacteria, and tartar from your teeth, which greatly supports good oral health.
